When you hear Mura Masa, what is the first thing that comes to your head ? A Japanese dish ? An insult ? Well, no. He’s a UK 20-year-old composer-songwriter and electronic music producer named Alex Crossan.
I first heard it at a friend’s who was playing a YouTube playlist, and suddenly this tune catches my attention:
It was a mix between hip-hop, electronic music and Japanese culture. It hypes you up and your body starts moving to the rythm, it was fresh. After hearing that, I started stalking the guy. I found out that the melody I had heard was part of his first mixtape: Soundtrack to a Death, out in 2014.
Heavily influenced by Japanese culture, the mix of these different styles gives us something explosive, fresh and modern. This mixtape is pure genius, every song is neatly elaborated and keeps on hyping you from start to end. He took his name Mura Masa from a metal band Periphery – Muramasa.
Last year he released his first EP, Someday Somewhere. He surprises us too with well polished songs , however, no Japanese influecne on this EP, but more of a smooth tropical/pop mood. His style is in constant evolution and that’s what we like at Hokuzy !
We can without a doubt say that Muramasa is a really promising artist with a bright future ahead. He slowly emerges on the british electronic music scene. If you liked it, he’ll perform in London at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on the 29th of September 2016 and in Paris at Le Trabendo on the 17th of November 2016. Meanwhile, listen to his last single What if I go :
Stay tuned !
